A double-sided apartment that looks to The Domain and the Art Gallery of NSW, on one side, and a narrow tapered courtyard on the other. This provided a perfect opportunity for natural cross-ventilation but the deep floor-plan and, many small enclosed rooms at the centre, meant that a large area of the apartment did not get natural sunlight and relied on mechanical ventilation to the bathrooms (unfortunately like most apartment buildings). The west-facing living areas, that look out over The Domain, were also compromised by an adjacent main bedroom. This made the living room narrow and dark, especially where the dining area and kitchen were located.
We relocated the main bedroom to the east-facing rear and doubled the width of the living space, opening it up to views and natural light. The main bedroom now has a generously sized, naturally ventilating and well-lit en-suite bathroom and a separate toilet. Located in the previously dark centre of the floor-plan, three new bathrooms – one done in red, one in blue and one in yellow mosaics – have high-level openable hatches and glass. This ensures that air can circulate through and over these wet rooms as well as through and across the apartment.
We also designed a set of moveable glass and bronze tables.
